| Description: |
Children often demonstrate confusing and challenging behaviors. Prior to implementing intervention strategies it is important to understand the issues that contribute to difficult behaviors. Many behaviors result from the child‘s effort to meet a specific need, as a response to environmental demands and stimuli, or as a learned behavior. School staff must be able to understand these behaviors; identify the underlying cause; develop intervention strategies to alter the behaviors; remediate the underlying problems, and implement these programs in multiple environments. This session will help guide participants through the Chaos that is Behavior: the underlying cause, and the factors that keep the behaviors alive. Participants will be introduced to a concrete methodology to guide clinical observations. Participants will be given the skills to begin to analyze why children behave the way they do and sort out sensory-based problems from other causes. Participants will be introduced to the common pitfalls that keep negative behaviors alive and learn how to introduce positive behavioral strategies to promote desirable behaviors.
EILA Credit, OT, PT and SLP CEUS will be requested.
